hey jealousy [25 Feb 2007|05:31pm]
Come to the Edinburgh Castle tomorrow night because that's where I'll be. Thaddeus and I are moving to Chicago--because they have a lake and we've been jealous of that for a long time. First we're going to Italy for a month and a half because we are totally jealous of that whole 'shaped like a boot thing' it has going on, but don't worry, we'll be in la, phoenix, and baltimore before that because we are really super jealous about that whole cesspool vibe all those places have been rocking. but before all of that, we'll be at the castle (mostly because we like beer and are jealous of the way it gets to hang out in a pint glass with foam) at nine o'clock monday the 26th of Feb.

I managed to fit a lot more into the blender this morning than usual. Brocolli, Spinach, Strawberries, Bananas (what is really pathetic is that I have to sing that Gwen Stefani song in my head to spell), yogurt, pomegranate juice, orange juice. It.s a weird muddy colour but the taste can.t be beat. The only drawback is the texture of little broc-beads in my teeth.
Pilates class is in twenty minutes and I will miss it because I woke up late. Yes I.m sluggish but I quit smoking and drinking coffee--so I plan on milking that for awhile.
I.m working at Wondercon tomorrow. It.s not as bad as it sounds. I.m helping set up a booth for this dude from chicago. All antique art nouveau posters from france and germany.
Tonight I have to watch nuns sing and dance. And it isn.t at the Castro Theatre.s "sing-a-long" night.

clever beer-battered lyrics and garage flavor make up the ingredients for this brand of southern-fried agony. some girl at sometime somewhere along the mississippi river told ben nichols he wasn.t good enough and that idea manifested into the most satisfying kind of self-loathing this side of conrad.s heart of darkness. lucero is the stuff that dreams are made of, the stuff that makes you tell the bartender to leave the bottle after slamming back another makers and solemnly saying to yourself, "well, alright."
heartbreak, guilt, alcohol and flight have been time-tested topics of song, but there is something about the way nichols' honey-whiskey voice pushes his sorrow into the microphone that makes it okay to raise your glass, shake your ass and get over yourself.

Well, I have made it to Sunday. An entire weekend off, making no money, not knowing what to do with myself because hey--I never get time off. I made an amazing dinner last night that involved pork tenderloin in a pouch. Yes, I have discovered the joys of pouch-cooking and heartily endorse it to anyone that might be reading this. Cook everything in a pouch, really, from this day on. Veggies are more flavorful, meats more tender, and you finally have an excuse to weed some complex carbs out of your meal. Did I mention pouch-cooking is virtually mess-free? That.s right. So go into your kitchen grab the foil or parchment paper and get to it. Anything goes in a pouch (except avocados---don.t be silly).
Thaddeus, Antony and I headed over to the Castle last night for many pints of Beamish and some fish&chips (that we really did not need to eat, after all of the pouch food). I put Grandmaster Flash on the jukebox and changed the entire mood of the night. One minute it was all laid-back retired hipsters talking about poetry and what have you--but by the end of 'white lines' the place was packed with a younger breed of college kids in halter tops. Here.s another thing---how do these girls wear halter tops at night? Hasn.t anyone told them they live in San Francisco? California sunshine does not apply to us. Hell, I don.t think Brian Wilson has ever been to San Francisco.
I sent a very strongly-worded email to the producer of the fashion show. The one who dicked me out of $2700. It made me feel worlds better and I still had the balls to give her my home address should she decide to send the check afterall. I don.t expect her to send anything, of course.
I would really love to go to the library today, but it is closed. Or, the San Francisco History Wing is closed. I had a major breakthrough in my research. It involves the mother-in-law of a friend who was a chorus girl in the 30s. She is the only one I.ve found that is still alive. I have to get to her before anything happens. Race against time, folks. Race against time.

every now and then, i come to a point in life where my response to everything goes something like, "are you fucking SERIOUS?!" usually it will start with something political. like bill o'riley on the daily show with jon stewert. or the most current issue of vanity fair (more than a bit disturbing on the katrina front). then it will spread to other things. the fact that the west wing is on nonstop on bravo; the fact that i feel as though i NEED to watch it for hours. then work comes into the picture. i think about how i took this weekend off to do some freelance work on a fashion show. how the fashion show is running itself into the ground and i still haven.t seen a dime. how the show begins tonight and they just changed venues and i still haven.t the slightest idea what is going on. how i will likely use the time i took off of work this weekend to watch the west wing and how i will never see a dime of that fashion show paycheck. then i do a personal reflection thing--like, jesus fucking christ, did you really just get out of bed? you need a shower. you need to go get something to eat, maybe go to the gym and work out some of that negative energy. but i know i already missed my pilates class--and i know that i won.t eat anything until i finish a pot and a half of coffee--and i know that i will secretly smoke a cigarette in the bedroom, right next to the window--yes the fire-escape is right outside that same window, it would take two seconds to go out there, thaddeus probably will notice that i.ve smoked in the house and i can so easily go out onto the fireescape but if i am outside the window, i have to bend my neck at an odd angle to watch the west wing. which is probably on. right now. see how high fashion falls?

The best gifts I ever recieved were from the same person. A signed rare edition of my favorite book, a typewriter I.d been drooling over for years and Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan with a plea to listen to the entire record when I.m ready. Since then, I listen to this record nearly every day. I realize I.m probably more thankful for this gift than any other one.
I went down to Santa Cruz this for a few days because I couldn.t stand the thought of waiting in San Francisco by the television while a city I love is torn apart. The distraction worked well. Brit has an enormous farmhouse on the beach, the boardwalk literally in the backyard. This is fantastic at night, when the whole thing just looks like fallen dinosaurs or an abandoned carnival. We lounged around for a few days, reading, basking in the sun and toasting New Orleans over hurricane shots, House of the Rising Sun blaring on the jukebox.
Been buried deep within the Barbary Coast lately. Research is a wonderful thing...getting dusty in the library with some microfiche, unraveling the mysteries of the city I live in.
Nadine is coming soon and I am so excited. She will be here for the Folsom Street Fair, which means she will go back and tell everyone very strange things about San Francisco. She will smuggle in a bottle of absinthe for me and I will take her to the Mitchell Brothers.

Also, on a much lamer note. I am very excited about next season.s mystery on Veronica Mars. That show is INTENSE.

My mother called very early the other morning and thaddeus, through some terrible lapse in judgment told her i was awake and gave me the phone. she tells me that she heard that the vaccinations for whooping cough distributed between the years 1978-1884 were tainted and that a bunch of people my age are now coming down with whooping cough. wHooping cough, is how she said it.
anyway. my birthday is on thursday so everyone should say nice things about me an/or send me nice things.

what i did this weekend [27 Jul 2005|05:28pm]
1. bought many rounds of natty boh upstairs at the ottobar (hey, a round for five people costs as much as one beer in san francisco)
2. hung out with an old friend and had a great time talking about old times, new times and times to come.
3. hung out with another old friend and realized a lot of shit that i already knew. some things don.t change, and others change for the worst.
4. went to frijoles after hours where evan refused to make mojitos but did offer up entirely too many shots of sambuca.
5. drove throught mountain roads to west virginia.
6. rode around on a horse called coke. (this is not at all a metaphor or even a clever play on words. the horse.s name was actually coke)
7. shot a pistol with my grandfather. i.m still a damn good shot, and the cheater.s pistol looked like a six-shooter but had nine shots, cause that.s how grandpa rolls.
8. had a great time catching up with an old friend over bad dessert and coffee. realized that there are people who.ve occupied a lot of time and space in my mind that i really barely know. realized that now is just a good a time is any to attempt to remedy that.
9. drank a million dirty martinis at airport bars and went through way too much gin on the six flights i took this weekend.
10. came home to a clean house, new bookshelves and great sex.

alright. i get it. i don.t update.

i.ve been working a lot. rock&roll. yippy.

just got a job doing a little opera tour with one of the best opera directors in the world. this means i spent all of yesterday driving to sacremento, san jose, berkely and around sf checking out churches. yeah. churches. there is a dutch organ in one of them and it is very difficult for me not to touch it. it.s beautiful.

so that.s that. an update.

cut to my glamourous eye-liner smeared, hair-frazzled, wine-stained hangover this morning. beautiful, folks, i swear to it.

found out that i get a paid day off this next pay period because of the whole ian brown thing. pedro the lion started soundchecking with a stone roses song and kim made them stop. word from waaaay up is that is is pretty safe to assume he will never be booked for another california show again, certainly not another san francisco show.

today i will watch closer and try to wake up. i joined blockbuster and for one month can watch as many movies as i can handle---i swear i.ve been doing three a day--before i cancel my membership. it.s silly because we get movies from amoeba for free, but hey.

also packing up my stuff from mine & zane.s room. he.s pretty sick right now---caught whatever it was that everyone has been catching. even missed his trip to virginia!

some shows coming up that i am looking forward to. have been plowing through books. i.m on like a two-a-day habit with magazine chasers.

i think i.m supposed to meet with my personal trainer today too, but the email system at work it down. again. so i have no way of knowing. i.m a lazy fuck and still haven.t gotten a new phone. anyone have a phone they want to give me? i hate paying this bill every month when it just sits there mocking me.

taurine germ-burns on the roof of my mouth courtesy five redbull to dull the rock&roll (a label loosely applied to this big fat bullshit band that i.ve lit more times than any brand of cigarette). a bottle of bailey.s later and still in the lighting booth. still until 3 am in the lighting booth. christ, i spend too much time in that fucking booth.
the guitarist of last nights band looks like george jones. weasly cuntbrine bastard that makes constipated faces whether or not he is actually taking a shit-solo. seriously, the other guitarist will be rocking a solo and this georgejones shitbird is wrangling his guitar like some enormous trout over two lousy chords. did i mention that he.s older than my grandfather and that this particular band plays primarily coversongs? yeah. i don.t want to see your eyeballs popping out and veins twitching over another jam version of hey joe.

hank 3 and overcooked edamame. missed the crawfish boil today because i am lazy and it.s overcast. maybe i.ll get leftovers tonight to ward off the homicidal feelings george jones revs up in me. on my way to the gym---which by the way i absolutely love--for about an hour before i sell my soul to george "perpetual slimy solo face" jones. fuck. i liked george jones before i saw this guys, now i just can.t seperate the rage.

ps. tim if you are REALLY in my hood you should hit me up! i haven.t seen you in YEARS. come to the great american music hall. i.ll be there. always there.

ted leo was awesome. apparently, last week of hippie hell and steve earle bliss was the most successful week in music hall history. no wonder i.m all sore and shit.

tonight is a very easy private event, followed by a couple more noise pops and fernet branca poster theft.

i watched beyond hypothermia the other night and it is one of my favorite movies now. dude, just see it.

lots of rum last night in honor of the late dr. thompson. i am presently hungover.

reading hume for philosophy class and it.s driving me nuts. better than aguinas though, i.ve never given philosophy i didn.t agree with a chance, i just close the book.

everyone should read the current issue of vanity fair. brilliant articles on kubrick, brando, james dean and howard hughs (they talk about how he flew his entire house to another town to impress a girl, prompting me to want to watch the aviator, despite it.s horrid lead)

time to squeeze into a little black dress and go to work. i.m not feeling tiptop so i might get some sushi on the way.

ps--severin is coming out here on the 28th!!! hear that kate? we gotta get homey fucked up west coast style.

I should be in philosophy class. I should be going to visit kindle at the hospital (his SIX hour surgery went fine) but I have to go into work now, and not get paid any extra just because the ld from tonight.s band didn.t send the rider until 10 last night and i just happened to stop by the hall and see it. he doesn.t want to work over line-check. everyone works over line-check, otherwise you.d have a bunch of people standing around for three hours, watching line-check. this shit pisses me off. and he.s all "it.s a professional courtesy to not work over line-check." and i said, "yeah, and it.s a proffessional courtesy to send your rider well before the eve of the show." that shut him up, but i really didn.t mean to say that. it wasn.t a professional courtesy.

kindle is hooked up to this morphine machine. he just has to push a button and he gets a dose. they also gave him a nicotine patch and a bionic leg. i told him he should stay there forever and flirt with nurses.
